The Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game is an annual event that celebrates the league’s top players. Originally begun in 1933, the game takes place each summer and features a match between a team of National League (NL) players and an American League (AL) team. It is considered one of the biggest events hosted by MLB and its popularity has transcended generations of baseball fanatics.
Over the years, certain traditions have become associated with the game itself. The iconic “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” song has been played at every All-Star Game since 1941, while pregame ceremonies often include singing of both national anthems. There is also a Home Run Derby competition prior to the All-Star Game itself where designated hitters aim to hit as many home runs as possible for their respective leagues.
In 2021, the MLB decided that 40th anniversary celebration of the 1982 All-Star Game would take place in Atlanta, Georgia as part of that year’s festivities. The 2022 MLB All-Star festivities are still being discussed, but multiple teams have already expressed interest in hosting such an event.
Purpose of the All-Star Game
The purpose of the All-Star Game, which is organized as part of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) midseason classic, is to bring together the best players in the game for an exhibition game that is viewed by millions of fans around the world. The All-Star Game first took place in 1933 and has since become one of the most popular sporting events in North America.
The All-Star Game selection process begins with fan voting to decide which players will participate in the All-Star Game and which teams they will represent. Each MLB team sends two representatives to complete their respective rosters. From there, teams are compiled before each league’s top vote-getters get an opportunity to compete against each other at the midsummer classic. Afterwards, The MVP award will be handed out to one player from each league who had a standout performance during the game.
For 2022, MLB announced Grapefruit League Spring Training stadiums for both AL and NL teams as their host venues for this year’s midsummer classic – AL stadium (Tropicana Field) located in St Petersburg FL and NL Stadium (CoolToday Park) located in North Port FL.
Selection Process
The All-Star Game is the most anticipated event in Major League Baseball (MLB). Every year, the best players from the American League and National League compete in the mid-summer classic.
The 2022 All-Star Game will take place at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, IL. Understanding the All-Star Game selection process can help you appreciate the event and why certain players were chosen as All-Stars.
Let’s dive into the details.
Voting by Fans
As part of the MLB All-Star Game selection process, fans have the opportunity to vote for the starting players they would like to see at the game. Fans are invited to cast their vote online or via a mobile device. Balloting begins online in late March or early April and runs through early July every year.
For a two-week period during balloting, fans can also cast their votes at participating MLB ballpark stadiums, with one ballot allowed per person at each stadium. Fans will be able to write in up to three players per position, who must all be from the same League.
The 2022 MLB All-Star Game will be held at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12th. So get prepared and make sure you use your opportunity to participate in selecting the future stars of baseball!
Selection by Managers
The all-star game selection process begins many weeks before the game, when the managers of each league’s participating teams submit their rosters of eligible players to the Major League Baseball office. The managers are asked to determine who they feel are the best players at each position during the current season and select those players for their respective league’s all-star team. Eligible players for selection include all active major league players who were on their respective teams’ roster on a particular date set forth by Major League Baseball.
In 2021, the 2022 MLB All-Star Game is scheduled to be held at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts on July 11-13. This will mark the first time since 1999 that Fenway Park plays host to baseball’s “Midsummer Classic”. This year’s All-Star rosters will not be finalized until June 30, and it remains unknown whether this date will be postponed due to pandemic concerns or other changes in the schedule of games prior to the All-Star break.
Regardless of when they are determined, these rosters will consist of 32 men – 16 from each participating league – selected based on their performance during that season’s regular season games up until June 30th as well as fan voting determined by a ballot distributed near midseason of 2021.
Selection by Commissioner
The Major League Baseball Commissioner and the office of the Commissioner select the host city for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game on a rotational basis among all Major League clubs. The host city and venue are announced approximately two years in advance of the game, which typically occur in July. The 2022 MLB All-Star Game will take place at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
When considering a site for the game, it is important to take into account various factors, including stadium availability and size, proximity to key markets, transportation infrastructure and local support available for hosting large events. For example, factors such as public transport, existing parking capacity and accommodations may limit some potential host cities from consideration. The length of access to a venue before setting up for an All-Star event is also an important consideration when assessing cities’ ability to accommodate an All-Star event.
Where is The 2022 MLB All Star Game
The 2022 MLB All-Star Game is set to take place at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California. This will mark the first time that the All-Star Game has been hosted in LA since 1980, and the fifth time overall.
But how do teams decide on which players make the All-Star team? Let’s take a look at the All-Star Game selection process.
Where is The 2022 MLB All-Star Game
The 2022 Major League Baseball All-Star Game is scheduled to take place at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio, on Tuesday, July 12. It will be the 93rd anniversary of the annual event hosted by the MLB.

The 2021 All-Star game was originally scheduled to be held in Atlanta but was relocated due to the controversial Georgia voting laws. This marks the first time that Progressive Field has hosted an MLB All-Star Game since its opening in 1994. Host City Selection Process
The Major League Baseball All-Star Game is an annual exhibition game sponsored by Major League Baseball (MLB) and played between all-stars from the American League (AL) and National League (NL). The host city for the 2022 All-Star Game will be announced after the conclusion of a competitive bidding process.
The MLB commissioner typically announces an early shortlist of potential cities. From this short list, MLB then selects its preferred host sites. Final contract negotiations and announcements follow thereafter. In 2021, Baltimore was chosen as the 2023 host city from the short list which included Cincinnati, Denver and Pittsburgh.
The selection process for a host All-Star Game site starts some time prior to when bids are sought. MLB awards All-Star Games to cities on a rotational basis and as described in the following criteria:
- An appropriate ballpark must be located in or near the proposed city
- Private financing should provide adequate funds to make improvements or alterations at the ballpark
- The hosting organization must commit to various promotional activities related to hosting such an event
- A desire that no two consecutive years that an American League team will benefit by playing at home
- As often as possible, it is preferred that both leagues would rotate among their most recent AL/NL World Championship franchises
Once teams meet this criteria, they then submit formal proposals in response to a request for proposals issued by Major League Baseball (MLB). Following evaluations of each team’s submissions, MLB selects its desired sites from among finalists during review meetings with each potentialcity’s representative group. If all goes well and contracts are not contested, MLB announces selected cities in February or March prior to when teams open their season for play.
